Photo Webcam | Our own product

What is a Fotowebcam? A photo webcam is a digital single-lens reflex camera (DSLR) or mirrorless system camera (DSLM) that has been converted into a webcam. Technically speaking, these cameras have a larger image sensor than a conventional IP webcam. Therefore, a photo webcam is still far superior to an IP webcam in terms of image sharpness, clarity, and detail. Not to mention the often significantly higher resolution. Thanks to long exposure, photo webcam systems deliver color images even in the lowest ambient light and at night. With the aid of the moon, breathtaking images are repeatedly created that immediately reveal the difference to an IP camera. For more than 10 years, we have poured our passion into this product. Over the years, we have acquired expert knowledge in photography, electrical engineering, energy technology, network technology, web development, and server administration, and incorporated it into this product. This allows us to operate photo webcam systems even in extreme locations and without infrastructure. Since this is our own product and we have not built up any complicated distribution structures, we can offer these systems very competitive prices and first-hand access to this technology for everyone.

Who do we recommend a photo webcam for? Static subjects (panoramic shots) in particular benefit greatly from this technique due to its high resolution, image fidelity, and long exposure capabilities in challenging lighting conditions. Whether for classic panoramas or long-term documentation, we recommend a photo webcam in every case. Even in locations without a power supply, we have developed our own sleep technology to operate such a system autonomously as a standalone solution with minimal material requirements.

Photo Webcam | FAQ

FAQHow do I connect a photo webcam?
The camera typically receives power and network access via a single network cable (PoE). This cable can be up to 100m long. If network cabling is unavailable or installation is too complicated, various alternatives are available as long as a power outlet is present (up to 100m away).
FAQWhere can a photo webcam be mounted?
The possibilities are virtually limitless. Whether wall, post, roof or open terrain: the right mounting material for the location is always available, tailored to individual needs.
FAQDo I need a special internet connection?
No, a webcam provides still images, and the speed of the internet connection is of secondary importance. The webcam obtains an IP address from the router via DHCP and requires internet access; this works with any standard internet connection. If no internet connection is available, we can also establish one using a 4G modem and SIM card or a Wi-Fi point-to-point connection over several kilometers.
FAQIs a genuine DSLR camera actually used, and is it robust enough?
Yes, we use standard SLR or system cameras. Over the last 15 years, these cameras have proven to be very robust and reliable.
FAQDSLR vs. DSLM. What is better?
Some mirrorless cameras offer more technical features than DSLR cameras. For example, certain models allow us to shoot in HDR mode, which, in our opinion, results in slightly better exposure parameters during the day. So, if you want to get the most out of your location, we recommend a mirrorless camera; the price difference is minimal.
FAQDoes a DSLR camera ever need to be replaced?
DSLR cameras have a physical shutter that will eventually wear out. Then the camera body needs to be replaced (with a spare part). Depending on the image interval, this can happen sooner or later; a reliable prediction is impossible (some DSLR cameras have been running at 10-minute intervals for 10 years). Generally speaking, the technology has been shown to have no shorter lifespan than conventional IP cameras. For several years now, we have also been installing DSLM cameras, which, depending on the model, no longer have a physical shutter. Whether these actually last longer than DSLR cameras will only become clear in several years. Premature failures have not yet occurred.
FAQDo I need a server or any other additional equipment?
No, there's a small computer inside the camera housing that connects to our servers. The images are ultimately uploaded to our internet server, where they can be viewed in our image archive and then easily integrated into my own website without any additional technical infrastructure.
FAQCan I operate a photo webcam with my own server?
No, the photo webcam needs the server connection to us because essential things like exposure control or image interval (solar) are negotiated there.
FAQWill my camera be publicly displayed on the webcam portal?
Not necessarily; we also operate a large number of private cameras that can only be viewed by the owner via password protection. Nevertheless, our goal is to make good panoramic locations available to the public whenever possible.
FAQWhat about data protection?
Photo webcam installations typically involve panoramic images. When setting up a camera, we take care to protect any privacy rights by appropriately positioning the camera. However, in cases where this is not possible through camera positioning alone, suitable countermeasures are available, such as pixelation or copying over parts of the image.

Live Webcams | Panorama Webcams | 360° Webcams | Video Surveillance

Several years ago, due to high demand, we expanded our product range to include a live streaming platform. This allows our customers to publish a true live stream on the internet. Animal observation projects, in particular, have increased significantly, but ski lift operators also appreciate this technology because it conveys the dynamic nature of the event to viewers at a glance (e.g., whether the slope or lift is open). This is also reflected in the access statistics; prime locations with live webcam systems consistently receive the highest number of hits at the right time.

The technology in detail: In principle, this technology works with almost any camera, meaning our customers can usually go live with an existing camera. Only a small mini-computer containing our live streaming software needs to be on the same network as the camera. The mini-computer transmits the camera's live stream to our live platform. From there, the live stream can be made publicly available. Of course, we can also supply a suitable camera if needed.

PTZ-Cameras (360°): If the camera is a pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) model, it is of course possible to execute any desired pan. Depending on the available bandwidth, this works in high resolution and, depending on the camera, also in very appealing image quality. However, please note: The live stream is continuously transmitted over the internet. Even if the bandwidth is theoretically sufficient, data transmission bottlenecks or congestion can occur in the local network and affect the live stream. This is due to the fundamental structure of the internet and the paths of data packets from node to node. In locations with insufficient bandwidth, it is possible to periodically record and display a camera pan instead of a live stream. This guarantees consistent image quality.

Video Surveillance Solutions: Should you require private camera surveillance, please contact us! We have already installed over 100 surveillance solutions, ranging in size from small to large, for our clients. Our customers include mountain railways, ski lifts, amusement parks, municipal utilities, power plants, equestrian facilities, hotels, other commercial clients, and private individuals. We also offer a range of compatible monitors.

About us

terra-hd:About us We are a small, owner-operated company from the Chiemgau region of Upper Bavaria. The beauty of the landscape was undoubtedly a major factor in our desire to share this beauty with the world in real time. However, all available and ready-made camera solutions were simply incapable of doing so – and most still aren't today. Therefore, in 2013, we began experimenting with higher-quality camera equipment ourselves, which quickly led to an initial test setup. More and more locations were added gradually, along with the first customers willing to pay for such a camera. With the increasing number of cameras, our brand awareness grew, even without a marketing or advertising budget. And so did the complexity. Many years of development work were required to move away from an unsatisfactory, makeshift solution. Today, we are glad that we never gave up and continuously developed the technology. Because after more than 10 years, our passion for new locations and expanding our camera technology is greater than ever!
